Adult Sailing Classes are being offered at Beachwood Yacht Club starting May 17th.

Yes, you read that correctly! It’s never too late to learn how to sail. The Beachwood Yacht Club (BYC) is offering several adult sailing courses starting this month. The Adult Sailing Lessons are taught over the course of four sessions (see schedules below).

Adult Beginner’s Course

Lessons will be given using a Sunfish. The goal of these beginner sailing courses is to have the student be able to navigate a triangular race course after four (4) sessions. The student tuition for each course is $150 and Sunfish rental, if required, is an additional $150.

There are two classes available:

Thursday Evenings: 6:00 - 8:00 PM on May 17, May 24, May 31 and June 7

Sunday Mornings: 9:30 AM - 12:00 PM on May 21, May 28, June 25, and July 2

Class days are not interchangeable.

Beginner’s/Intermediate Course

This year, BYC is also offering a Beginner’s/Intermediate Sailors Sailing Course using BYC FJ Sailboats. The FJ is a slightly larger sailboat than the Sunfish, having two sails, a jib and a main sail. The FJ requires two sailors to operate it. The student tuition is $150 per sailor and the boat rental is $150 which is split between the two sailors that will be operating the boat. It is preferred that both sailors know each other; however, if requested, we will try to match two people up for one boat.

Introduction to Racing Tactics Course

This course is for anyone who has either taken the adult beginner sailing course or knows how to sail and is interested in learning basic racing tactics (starts, finishes, rounding marks, passing during off-wind legs, sailing the layline on upwind legs, reading the wind, covering, etc.).

This course will be conducted using Sunfish. Student tuition is $150. There will be an additional $150 fee to rent a Sunfish, if required.

FJ Course and Racing Tactics course schedule:

Sunday Afternoons: 12:00 PM - 2:00 PM on May 21, May 28, June 25, July 2
